Greetings, Cycling Fans.
Don and I appreciate your interest in the Castle to Castle Brevet and hope to see you in June for the second running of the event, Japan's original off-road bikepacking brevet. Much as we'd like to add to the Castle to Castle series, our busy schedules prevent us heading out for more than one bikepacking weekend a year, a situation many other riders share, no doubt. So, for now, we'll keep it to just the single Castle to Castle. New for this year is the One-day Brevet Series. These rides will be from 80 to 150 kilometers in length and vary from intermediate to advanced in difficulty. The routes will be mapped (stay tuned), and riders will be free to attempt the brevets at any time and on any bike they choose. (When Don or I plan to tackle one of the routes ourselves, we'll post an update to the blog.) It is hoped that riders will use Strava to record their efforts. Results will be collected and regularly updated on Japan by Bike. At the end of the year we'll hold a dinner party to swap stories and congratulate the individual brevet and series champions. The route maps will be posted soon. Hope to see you on la course. The dates for the 2016 Castle to Castle are June 18-19, Saturday- Sunday.
Remember, no registration or fee is required for this event. We hope to see you this summer for the 2nd annual Castle to Castle. Hi Bikepacking fans If you were one of the mad cyclists who took part in Japans 1st ever off road brevet with us in 2015 , you will either be excited to hear of our first brevet for 2016 or will stop reading this right now !. Hopefully you had a great adventure last year or heard about how crazy it was and would love to join the next one. We have picked another fantastic course not quite as hard as last years Castle to Castle but with some fantastic scenery and history along the route. The 2016 event will start in Shibata city , Niigata Ken and finish at Aizuwakumatsu . The final dates have not been decided as yet but you can check out a full description of the route on our Brevet Series page . Below is a photo taken at the campsite that we will be using on the Sat night of the Shibata to Aizuwakumatsu brevet. It is a beautiful lake side campground located in Fukushima. The historic village of Ochijiku , where you can have lunch on day 2
Now as bikepacking explodes around the world with more people loading their bikes up and exploring the great outdoors , there has also been a wave of new bikepacking related websites as well, some offer some fantastic info and inspiring photos that just make you want to load up your bike and head for the hills - one such website is listed below
http://www.bikepacking.com/ Check it out as there is a ton of great photos and useful info to help plan your next bikepacking mission Day 2 Don is the first up the morning of Day 2, by the time I roll out of the tent he's ready to cook breakfast. The temperature has dropped overnight, bringing a heavy dew., the tents will have to be packed wet. Koide-san, Komura-san, and I are on the bikes at 6:30, with Don 15 minutes up the road. I cycled the route for Day 2 months earlier, so I know what is in store: paved roads, but a lot of climbing before lunch, and limited resupply options until after the toughest sections. We catch Don after a few kilomteters and ride together over a nice section with flat to downhill conditions. Mt. Ide and the chain of which it is part are to the right, with Yonezawa straight ahead. Before we get into the city we turn right and head for the day's biggest challenge, the 1450 meter Shirabu Pass, some 15 kilometers distant, The road begins to climb the riders to separate. Ride and push. Push and push. Altogether I will push 90% of the climb, which is frequently 10% in gradient. The humidity is low, however, the temperature 25, the breeze welcome. There are no distance markers, but when I see "1100 meters" I know I'm getting close. 1200. 1300. 1400. A few minutes later I reach the car park and toilet block perched at the top. A group of road cyclists in "lurid lycra" is gathered near a commemorative marker, and I ask one of the riders to snap my photo. I overhear a few discussing cycling in Niigata. "Are you from Niigata City?" Yes, from Kita-ku. And Chuo." "I live in Chuo too." We chuckle over the unlikeliness of such a meeting, the cyclists remark on the 29er's large tires and the gear on the bike. "Sayonara". The Sky Valley Line, or Route 2, is popular with drifters, to judge by the tire marks. The descent to Lake Hibara is very, very steep, and unforgiving of misjudgements. And it's a lot of fun. The road snakes along the lakeshore, with stunning views of Hibara as well as Ura Bandai. Fishing boats ply the waters, a mirror of the faultless blue dome of sky. Just up the road is a 道の駅, or rest station, with cafeteria, souvenir shop, and toilets, the only real resupply point between the campground and Aizu Wakamatsu. The shokudo has what you'd expect, several fried cutlet dishes, ramen, yakisoba, etc. The road out of Ura Bandai offers some of the best downhill of the Castle to Castle, about 10 km, smooth, long, and straight. Just before the turnoff for Aizu, a shouted "Hey!" It's the 2 riders forced to withdraw the day before, on the course to cheer the riders as they enter the home stretch. Thanks, guys. Aizu is 30 km off in the distance, through the haze and shimmering 35 heat. I have never been to the Tsuruga Castle and think it's nearer than it proves. Cycling down the main street I become concerned at the absence of signs announcing Aizu's main tourist draw. But finally, a sign, and now there are only a few hundred meters to go. Cross the moat, turn to the right, and there she is, after 250 km and 20 hours: the second half of the Castle to Castle. Castle to Castle, Day 1. We leave the hotel for Tsuruoka Park at 7:00, accompanied by two other Niigata riders. Like many such towns in Japan, Tsuruoka's castle today exists solely in historical records and references to the city as a 城下町, or castle town; the park commemorates this history. Riders trickle in: 2 from Saitama, 2 from Tsuruoka itself (They will ride with us to the Asahi Super summit), Koh and his mates from Tokyo, a rider from Niigata who rode the previous day from Niigata City and spent the night in the park itself, and finally, a lone rider from Tokyo. There are 13 of us now. Don snaps photos, and then we're off. The Tsuruoka riders lead us out of town along a paved river embankment, local knowledge proving superior to Google maps. The gradient rises gently, the mountains loom larger. It's warm and humid but not unpleasant. Finally the start of the Asahi Super rindo, Japan's longest forest road. We don't know what to expect, neither of us having ridden the route before, though photos on the net and motorbike touring maps indicate generous sections of off-road. As we will discover, our description of the event as comprising "significant" sections of gravel is somewhat of an understatement. At this point in the narration I'll pause and let Don's photos tell the story. Day 1, continued. The pass marking the Yamagata/ Niigata border is reached, the riders from Tsuruoka turn around, and after a brief rest, the more dehydrated set off down the road in search of water, which is in short supply along the Asahi Super. A few kilometers away we find a spring pouring down a rock face and fill, refill, and take a proper break. It's mid-afternoon, though, and Don and I are ignorant of just how much riding (and in what conditions) remains before Oguni, so the two of us, accompanied by Koide-san, are back on the bikes before the others. Niigata has a penchant for paving, and much of the route is now sealed, the cycling smooth and downhill. "Murakami to the right, to the left Oguni", a good sign, we are getting somewhere now. Curve along the artificial lake created by the Upper Miomote Dam and a gate. Locked. With a white van parked just the other side. There's no question of going back, so we lift our machines over, and I lead out. We enter the Miomote Rindo, back in Yamagata now, and the reason for the gate becomes clear. The route is rough, partially blocked in places, boggy from recent rains; it doesn't appear that the track has been open, officially, in some while, possibly years. I lose visual contact with the others about the time a swarm of "abu" make physical contact with me, provoking a volley of abuse that leads to a shouted "Brian, are you ok? Stop!" from Koide-san. I've heard that without industrial-strength repellent the only thing a person attacked by horseflies can do is outrun them- 10 kph seems to be the speed at which they leave off the attack. It's rough, though, uphill, I'm going barely 5, the brutes are attempting to enter every uncovered orifice. I curse Don for talking me into this crazy adventure. Surely this blasted rindo is much longer than the maps indicate. Where's the downhill? Oguni? Don can do this by himself next year. These thoughts and more, as the assault continues. But the road is starting to level, it's not the imagination, now truly downhill, and paved again, the abu are gone, this isn't so bad. And finally, civilization, in the form of Oguni. A small store selling ice cream, cold drinks, fish on a stick, and Panasonic washing machines. And air-conditioned. In about 15 minutes Koide-san arrives, followed by Don a bit later. I mention the abu. The others assure me they were unmolested: spray. Oh, forgot to pack mine. It will be dark in under two hours and we've still 30k to go, so we head out after a short rest. More climbing. Koide-san is off the front, perhaps he'll be the first to hit the onsen bath at the campsite. I'm riding alone, with Don some distance behind. Now it's dark, lights on. Where is the campsite? And then, on a particularly nasty uphill, switchbacks, slow, the abu again. I fantasize about turning around for Oguni, I can catch the last train for Niigata. But the campsite is surely just over the ridge. It isn't. But finally something looming up out of the darkness, and there's Koide-san at the front desk. "I've made the reservations", he says. The bath closes at nine, which gives us a bit over an hour. Don is behind us, I wait out front to flag him down. Finally a light, then a rider. Now Don's cursing me. And the abu. Day 1, Postscript
We hurriedly pitch our tents and then head for the bath. There is no better way to end a long day in the saddle than with a long soak. So we soap and soak, soak and soap, leaving time to raid the beer vending machine before the building closes for the evening. A cold can, an air-conditioned lounge, "kampai". At that very moment, as the night manager is preparing to turn off the lights, who should walk in but Krewe Kitazawa? At the end of the day, 7 of 11 starters have made it to Shirakawa, 2 have chosen to spend the night in Oguni, and 2 have decided to withdraw. Castle to Castle 2015, event report. Conceived in 2013, cancelled last year, the Castle to Castle was held, at last August 1-2 this year. Joining Don and me for Japan's first ever off-road brevet were three other riders from Niigata and an additional eight from the greater Tokyo area. As an early start was planned from Tsuruoka, Yamagata, on Saturday the 1st, the riders traveled by train to that historic castle town the day before, meeting at a tavern near the staion in the evening. We discovered that some of us had met the previous autumn in Hakuba, Nagano, for the Japan single-speed championships. Despite the early departure scheduled for the following morning, a few of the riders remained convivial until just hours before we rolled out of town. Whether they may have had cause for regret will be seen in the next installment of the Castle to Castle event report, to follow soon. |
